Mindfulness and Pain: Just Say Ouch By Maya Talisman Frost

What's the best way to manage pain?

Just say ouch.

That's a simplified description of the role of mindfulness in reducing the experience of pain. The secret isn't in focusing on the painful sensation itself. No, the power is in recognizing our tendency to say way more than ouch.

Here's the basic math: Suffering = Pain + Resistance. Can mindfulness reduce the sensation of pain? Not exactly, but it can markedly reduce the total suffering we experience by illuminating--and even eliminating--our resistance.

Pain is a warning. It informs and motivates us. If you're resting your hand on a hot stovetop, it's important to feel that pain in order to remove your hand quickly and avoid burns. We need the sensation of pain to protect our bodies from further injury.

Pain also teaches us new ways to move. If you are consistently hurting your back on the weekend, your pain is letting you know that 1) you need to rest and 2) you need to learn a healthier way to work or play.

Chronic pain is more difficult. It is hard to find any redeeming value in long-term pain. We've learned our lessons already, but it persists, and there's not much that can be done about it.

Mindfulness is extremely valuable in alleviating the experience of all kinds of pain but it is especially effective for those likely to hurt on a daily basis.

We feel pain. We say ouch--mentally or verbally. Then what happens? We get wrapped up in ways to resist the pain. We start a mental dialogue about how we're going to deal with it (medication, ice, heat, rest, acupuncture, massage, magnetic therapy, etc.). Then, we get caught in thoughts and emotions:

• Disappointment ("Now I can't go hiking.")

• Worry ("I hope it's nothing serious.")

• Fear ("What if it gets worse?")

• Anger ("Why is it hurting now? I already had surgery!")

• Depression ("What if I have to stop playing tennis?")

• Excitement ("I'm going into labor!")

Our resistance stirs up a lot more tension, resulting in a much more pronounced experience of the pain. Worrying about pain really does make it worse.

This is where mindfulness comes in. By paying attention to the thoughts and emotions that accompany pain, you can learn to separate these from the sensation. Once you've done that, you can actually eliminate the tension and see the pain for what it is--and no more.

By seeing the internal dialogue that comes with pain, you can learn to handle it skillfully and reduce your suffering.

The next time you feel pain, take a moment to focus on it. Watch your thoughts and emotions as they come up. Breathe. And go back to ouch.

Simple pain never felt so good.

How to Get Rid of Smoking, Drinking, Drugs and Other Bad Habits

These are practices that I do whenever I am trying to release a pattern that no longer serves my highest good. I am using smoking as an example but you can fill in any other habit instead of smoking like drinking, drugs and other addictive behaviours. Sometimes addictive patterns emerge from emotional charges. You get stressed at work for example and you take a smoke. Whenever emotional charges occur, they need to be cleared.

1. Buy a small notebook that can easily fit into a shirt pocket or purse. Whenever you engage in the habit that you are trying to release, write down the date, time, the people you were with and the reason why you felt drawn to engaging in the pattern that you are trying to release.

2. What you are trying to do is to identify the triggers that are supporting the old habit. Also a lot of time we have unconscious agreements with others to support us in maintaining our old habits. If you conscientiously do this for a week, you will know exactly what the triggers are for your habit and who in your life is supporting you in doing this behavior.

3. After a week, take out the notebook and make a list of the triggers/reasons you indulged in the habit and the people who appear to be supporting the habit. Post both of these lists up in your home and take time throughout the day to look at both lists. This will help you to understand what the underlying foundation of the pattern are.

4. For triggers, begin to recondition yourself. Say for example that you want to give smoking and that you have a trigger that after you eat you usually smoke or whenever you have a break you smoke. After you eat or have a break, instead of smoking - take 30 deep breaths instead.

5. For the people list, look at who is on it and begin to evaluate the relationship. If some of them are people in your work group that the major thing you have in common with is smoking, tell them that you are trying to give up smoking and that you will no longer want to take smoking breaks together. Explain to them that it is not personal that you just have a hard time for the present watching others smoke when you cannot.

6. If the people on the list are family members, you need to explain to them that you are trying to give up cigarettes and ask them to support you in this.

7. For those periods when you are just dying to smoke, for the first week, make a promise to yourself that if you still feel this strongly fifteen minutes from now you will smoke. If you do feel that way fifteen minutes later, go ahead and smoke. During week two change the time period to a half hour. During week three change the period to an hour.

8. I feel that energy healing can help support people who are serious about letting go of addictive behaviour. Energy healing focuses on the underlying root cause of imbalances rather than on the symptoms.

9. Another valuable thing to discover is what is your energetic reward from engaging in the bad habit. How are you benefiting from it. Once you identify what the energetic payback is to you, you can figure out another way to get the payback without indulging in the bad habit or addictive behavior.

Alter Your Perceptions By Ryan Joseph

This article first appeared in The Sept. 2004 issue
of The ZoneNet newsletter

No matter how fast we run, many of us are haunted by the urge to look back. Perhaps it is to see if anybody is following or to congratulate ourselves on how far we have come. Or maybe it is to see what we have left behind. As fast as Western medicine is moving, many people are looking to the Far East for answers. We just jump into the old medicinal time machine and travel back in time as far as ten thousand years to rediscover holistic alternatives to our modern health problems From the herbal remedies of ancient India to Chinese medicine,

this rejuvenation is turning us back into students of our bodies. This is called complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM for short.

It has been estimated that about 50% of the people in the United States have tried some sort of alternative medicine. The list of what is considered CAM is constantly in flux, as some therapies prove themselves safe and effective and become adopted into the family of conventional medical practices.

People sometimes use the terms complementary medicine and alternative medicines interchangeably, which is not correct. Modern medicine is usually used in conjunction with conventional medicine, although it could also be used by itself. It is primarily about helping the body heal itself using natural means such as magnets, herbs, acupuncture, essential oils, nutrition and so forth. Alternative medicine goes against the usual format of modern medicine and is used in place of more conventional practices.

There is a specific duality in the field of medicine between “normal medicine” and “irregular medicine.” Many of us might agree that this duality does not have to exist, and yet it does. As much as the exploration of Western medicine continues to thrive, CAM is also blooming out into our mass consciousness. The American people spent about forty-five billion on CAM in 1997 alone. Obviously, people are finally beginning to seek out alternative ways of maintaining a state of wellness. According to a survey

conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, thirty-six percent of adults are using some type of CAM.

When antioxidant megavitamin therapy and prayer specifically for health reasons are featured in the definition of CAM, that number rises to sixty-two percent. CAM use has spread throughout all demographics but certain people are more likely to use CAM than others. Females, for instance, use CAM to a much larger degree than males. In addition, persons with higher levels of education, people who have been hospitalized in the past year and former smokers are more likely to use CAM. People use CAM for a broad range of health conditions. According to research studies, Americans are most likely to use CAM for neck, head, back or joint pains.

They often use them for colds, anxiety, depression or sleeping problems.

There are several reasons why people decide to turn to CAM.

The majority of Americans use CAM with the belief that it will improve their health when used in tandem with modern medical treatments. Some individuals try CAM after modern medical treatments have failed them. And of course some people simply cannot afford modern medical treatments and turn to CAM as a more realistic solution.

The Future of Healing... By Bill Austin

Your FUTURE is NOT in a doctor's office or a vial of prescription drugs.

Western medicine has done a wonderful job in treating our symptoms and masking the pain of physical imbalances with drugs that cost a small fortune. Pain temporarily dissipates, perhaps, or symptoms lessen, but the root cause often remains. The sad news about this is, the older we get, the more we’ll come to rely on expensive pills and the more frustrating time we’ll spend in medical facilities.

Unless…

Doesn’t it make more sense to address the core issues that underlie physical suffering? This is where Energy Healing comes into play and can assist you.

You can change from “OK” to “Oh, wow!”

Almost everyone has experienced that feeling of hopelessly slogging through life, just getting by, or wasting their energy and talent. Problem is, people can go on for a very long time like that, just getting through, just doing OK. Many people, I think it’s fair to say, go on like this for a lifetime.

The thing is, you don’t have to approach life that way. No matter how many bad experiences, negative beliefs, episodes of hurt and anger are in your past, they don’t have to dictate your life. They can be healed and cleared away, not through excruciatingly long-term and difficult periods of self-work… but through a spiritual gift that’s available to anyone.

The gift of Energy Healing

I personally believe that if our world sometimes gives us evil, disappointment, hurt, tragedy, grief, and hundreds of potentially devastating experiences, then the universe also provides help and a way for us to heal it. Energy Healing is like a gift, a secret code for unlocking and undoing the damage.

Here’s why energy healing works: Science has shown that everything is energy with a certain vibration and frequency. At birth, all of our systems, organs and energy fields vibrate at the level of unconditional love which is optimal for physical health and well-being. Throughout life, though, we begin to absorb the negative beliefs and sustain the shocks and hurts that block emotions and disrupt the energy field. Vibrations are lowered or changed, physical systems respond by setting up stress-level defenses or even resulting in pain or disease. The energy fields are further disrupted, creating a snowball effect –and over time, the negativity and hurt is reinforced in the body.

Energy Healing seeks to eliminate these blockages and negative cycles by restoring vibration and frequency of the energy field to the original pure, healthful state. Energy flows to positively affect emotions, outlook, ambition, ability and possibility in your life.

More powerful than technology, more effective and pure than pharmaceuticals, more permanent than talk therapy, more life-changing than any other methods, Energy Healing helps you to clear the millions of negative thoughts, beliefs, emotions and attitudes that comprise the root cause of why you often feel ZAPPED and out of sorts.

The help you need is finally here!

If you’re trying by sheer willpower to force yourself to have a “better attitude,” to do more, be more cheerful and enjoy yourself more, you know it just doesn’t work. It’s time to streamline and simplify by taking advantage of one of the great powers available to you – Energy Healing!

Genital Warts Natural and Alternative Treatment Remedies By S.A. Smith

Have you been diagnosed with genital warts caused by the HPV virus? If so, your physician has probably advised you of the more conventional treatments available such as pharmaceutical ointments, cryosurgery (freezing), electrocautery (burning) or laser treatment. While many people undergo these types of treatments, some opt for a less invasive natural solution by visiting a Naturopathic doctor. While there is no cure for the hpv virus, there are specific natural treatments that may help reduce and eliminate the warts over time.

TOPICAL TREATMENTS

Before resorting to medically invasive treatments many people are choosing to try alternative treatments that may naturally help reduce or eliminate genital warts. Many holistic treatment resources advise that different remedies will work for different individuals so it may take a little trial and error to find one suited to your needs. Experiment with applying the following directly to the infected wart areas:

Goldenseal: considered to have natural antibiotic properties and may destroy many types of viral infections.

Tea Tree Oil: strong anti-viral and anti-bacterial aromatherapy essential oil.

Aloe Vera: healing and soothing properties.

Garlic Oil: or even raw garlic is believed to promote white blood cells ability to fight infection.

Sour Apple Juice: it is believed the beneficial effect is from the magnesium in the apple

Most of these topical treatments have not been clinically proven as an effective treatment for genital warts, but have shown to have positive benefits is related studies or in fighting other types of viral infections. Other notable mentions for natural topical remedies also include; cabbage juice, banana skin, chickweed, dandelion juice, rubber plant, and pineapple juice.

HERBAL IMMUNE BOOSTING SUPPLEMENTS

Antiviral herbal remedies taken internally to boost the body’s natural ability to fight viral infections include the following supplements:

Echinacea: known for its ability to boost the immune system, is important in the treatment of genital warts.

Astragalus: used in Chinese herbal medicine for over 2000 years, Astragalus is known to improve the body’s ability to fight off viral and bacterial infections, such as the Human Papilloma Virus, by boosting the body’s immune system. Astragalus has been taken as a supplement by people undergoing chemotherapy to help restore their tired immune systems.

Garlic powder tablets: Once used in 1550 BC by Egyptians as an external treatment for tumors, garlic has long since been recognized for it’s medicinal values. Of the many benefits garlic has on the human body, it promotes the ability of white blood cells to fight infection. A natural antibiotic, garlic is effective in countering bacteria, fungus and viral conditions.

Vitamins: Supplementation with high doses of vitamin A, B complex, vitamin C, E, zinc, lactobacillus acidophilus and the amino acid L-cysteine have shown to have immune boosting benefits.

In addition, other noted antiviral herbal supplements include dandelion, greater celandine (cheilidonium), mullein, thuja, houseleek, goldenseal, calendula, lomatium, pau d'arco and wintergreen.

DIET AND LIFESTYLE

It is also suggested that you take a proactive approach in improving your health through lifestyle. By reducing sugars and refined foods, reducing red meat, increasing vegetables and fruit, taking the necessary vitamins and minerals, drinking plenty of water, regular exercise and getting proper rest, you will boost your immune system which will help in fighting off the virus.

EMOTIONAL STRESS

Because genital warts are considered a sexually transmitted disease, diagnosis will often have an emotional impact on the sufferer. Many people will experience a whole gamut of feelings including guilt, fear, rage, isolation and helplessness. HPV is one of the most common viruses in the world with an estimated 20 million sufferers, so as you can see you are not alone. It is believed that emotional health has a direct impact on your physical health. Therefore it is important to work through these feelings. Contact your local STD clinic for a list of support groups available in your area, or there are countless support groups and message boards available on the internet. Through seeing other people’s experiences, you will see HPV is a very manageable virus.

Since most of these natural remedies are considered reasonably safe, they may be worth investigating before turning to invasive and costly medical treatments. Ensure to discuss any alternative treatment strategies with your health care practitioner before starting them. Quiet Discoveries Lead to Fast Sinus Relief By Bruce Spiegler

It’s amazing what you can find when you start your search a little outside the bulls eye. While clicking through Magnetic Resonance Imaging research online, my colleagues and I found some intriguing scientific studies completely by accident!

What did we find? Well, let's just say if you've got a stuffy nose you should try magnets before sniffling through that bottle of nasal spray!

Did you know that every year, more than 35 million Americans suffer from sinusitis? It’s one of the leading chronic diseases in the United States [1]. And it’s no wonder, as bacteria, viruses, cigarette smoke, and allergens like pollen, mold, dust mite feces and pet dander are all common causes of this condition [2]. Unless you live in a bubble, there’s really no escaping these tiny antagonists.

The sinuses are actually four pairs of hollow spaces in the bones of the face. Connected to the nose, air is allowed to flow in and out of these spaces. To help warm and filter the air, each sinus is lined with a mucous-producing membrane, called the mucosa [3].

Acute sinusitis occurs when the mucosa is irritated and inflamed. The small openings from the nose to the sinus cavities become congested (or even completely blocked), causing the facial pain and pressure most of us have experienced at some point in time. Mucus production is often increased as well, adding to the pressure, and causing that annoying runny nose symptom [3].

Many people turn to preventive methods like HEPA air filters, or frequent cleaning of carpets and bed sheets to reduce household allergens [4]. Decongestants, saline nasal sprays, and vaporizers are commonly used to treat the symptoms--but as you and I know, they take time to work.

This is where those studies come in. There’s an interesting, but little known fact about the sinuses: they are magnetically sensitive.

Based on our own research and experiences with clients and health practitioners over the years, we’ve observed that sinus congestion is dramatically improved or completely relieved with the application of magnetic therapy. In fact, taking about 20-30 minutes on average, it’s one of the conditions that biomagnetics alleviates quickest.

Until recently, though, we didn’t have much research to back these findings (other than our own records). But, while sifting through online abstracts from MRI research, I happened to stumble upon this:

Dating back to 1983, a study was conducted to assess the influence of magnetic fields on the physiology and behavior of biological organisms, and to search for possible magnetic sources within the organisms themselves.

It was found that a wide range of life forms could detect and orient to magnetic fields. (Like having a built-in compass.) Results showed magnetic orientation by bacteria was due to the presence of particles of magnetite (ferric/ferrous oxide) within the organisms.

The same magnetic material was also found in bees, homing pigeons, dolphins and other organisms--including humans. More specifically, the researchers found that "the bones of the sphenoid/ethmoid sinus complex of humans are magnetic and contain deposits of ferric iron". (The sphenoid/ethmoid sinuses are located between the eyes and progress inward towards the back of the head [3].)

Refining our search, we were able to uncover other MRI studies confirming this finding. Here’s a brief timeline of what was found:

1986 - "Magnetic Resonance Imaging [using a 1.5 Tesla (15,000 Gauss) magnet and a spin echo technique] has revealed a remarkably intense signal from abnormal tissue in the human paranasal sinuses. Inflammatory disease in the maxillary, sphenoid, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses has been detected and demonstrated with greater clarity than any other available technique."

1990 - A study conducted at the UCLA School of Medicine tested conditions affected by MRI field strength. Results illustrated that "magnetic susceptibility artifacts are prevalent on the boundary of air-containing paranasal sinuses".

1995 - Research at Uppsala University in Sweden discovered that "large, local magnetic field variations up to 3 parts per million were found in the human brain near interfaces between air or bone and brain tissues".

2002 - An Ohio State University study compared differences in magnetic field susceptibility at tissue interfaces in the human head. "Considerable magnetic field inhomogeneities were observed in the inferior frontal lobes and inferior temporal lobes, particularly near the sphenoid sinus and the temporal bones."

These four independent studies all relate to the notion that human sinuses are magnetically sensitive. When compared to other regions of the head, more intense magnetic field readings are seen, and conditions of inflammation are more easily observed.

So how does this lead to sinusitis relief?

Magnetic therapy is proven to be effective in reducing inflammation, a primary symptom of sinusitis. By reducing inflammation of the mucosa, mucous blockages can be drained and the sinus cavities reopened. This, allows you to breathe freely again, while eliminating the facial pain caused by pressure build-up.

When applied properly, magnetic therapy products can relieve sinus congestion in as little as 15 minutes. That's faster than any decongestant or vaporizer, lasts longer than most nasal sprays, and is completely free of any side effects (like dryness or burning). Not to mention, you won't need to worry about buying refills or possible addiction to certain nasal decongestants.

What Therion products work best to help relieve sinusitis?

The Eye & Sinus Mask is designed specifically for relief of your sinus congestion. Inside it has 28 neodymium magnets covering areas around your eyes, forehead and upper cheeks. (The magnetic field has an effective penetration depth up to 2.5 inches.) You can expect sinus and headache relief within 15-25 minutes of wearing it.

For even faster relief plus more restful sleep, Therion 's magnetic dual contour pillow is the perfect choice. The visco elastic (memory) foam is soft and comfortable, but also supportive. You'll actually feel it adjusting and conforming to the shape of your head and neck. It's ideal to use as a regular sleeping pillow, as the magnetic field reaches the pineal gland. This is a magnetically sensitive area in the brain that functions to induce sleep by secreting melatonin. (See the article "Having Trouble Sleeping" found in the Learning Center at www.therionresearch.com.

So before you open that box of ‘non-drowsy’ decongestants or reach for the nasal spray on your nightstand, give magnetic therapy a try. If it’s fast acting with no side effects, and never needs a refill, what do you have to lose?

More Sinus Headaches Home Remedies By Mike Lindsey

One of the best sinus headaches home remedies, is called acupressure. All you got to know is your sinus points and then you can use this acupressure method to treat your self and rid yourself of the pain, and the best thing about the acupressure method is that it has no side effects. This is one of those sinus headaches home remedies that you can do completely on your own and if you are doing it properly, you can get almost instant relief. I have described the steps in detail in the points that follow, try doing it and I promise you, you'll be glad you did.

1. First of all you have to get a clear idea of where your sinuses really are. This is essential in order for this one of your sinus headaches home remedies, to work.

2. For this I recommend that you lie down on a flat surface preferably without the support of a pillow.

3. The next thing you should do is run your fingers gently over your face, taking note of the various rises and falls.

4. Now let your fingers linger in the portion above your eyes but just below the eyebrow.

5. Feel the bone over there and let you fingers sense out a notch in that bone.

6. This space extends from there towards the nasal bone.

7. This is your first sinus point

8. Now let your fingers trail down further till they reach the depressions if we can call them that on both sides of the nose halfway between the eyes and your mouth. This is your second sinus point.

9. Now what you have to do is apply pressure to these sinus points.

10. You have to be careful when you do this and please take care to use only the soft balls of your fingers and not the tips, which may have long nails.

11. First of all apply pressure gently.

12. You might experience a particular pricking sensation as you do.

13. If it hurts, you may stop immediately.

14. If not you may continue applying more and more pressure till you can tolerate it.

15. Then gently let go and lie there for a minute experiencing the pain fading away.

16. Repeat this with the second sinus point.

17. A point that you may bear in mind is that if your sinuses are infected these regions will be slightly swollen.

And lastly it is also a good idea to use water to rinse your nose. This is a very effective way of clearing your sinuses and saving your self from a bout of dust allergy as well. All you have to do is cup your hand and hold a little bit of water in it. Dip you nose in and inhale the water very gently.

Remember the water must only ascend the passage of your nose and must not go any further. You can control the ascent of the water by controlling your breath. After this breathe out and let the water out. Repeat this a couple of times. You might snort the first two or three times but after that you will soon get the hang of it.

Why Should You Use Colon Cleansers?

Colon cleansing is not a basic need of human beings. No one needs colon cleansing.

Wait… I think I should change the sentence to “No one needs colon cleansing if everyone is eating healthy and natural food!” Nowadays, foods are getting more unnatural and more chemical. They are no longer the food we eat thousand years ago. There’s a saying that we are eating chemicals instead of food.

When these kinds of food enter our body, it can’t be fully absorbed or eliminate by our body. It stays in our colon. After some times, some might turn into toxic that slowly absorbed by our body and some might block our colon from absorbing nutrition effectively.

Colon cleansing allows you to take away all those matters that are stuck and accumulated for more than 20 years in our body. After colon cleansing, most people lose weight and went back to their ideal weight. Some look much more younger and recover from diseases because their body can absorb nutrition effectively again!

Colon cleanser is one of the options used because you can get it easily from the market and it’s cheap. It helps taking out those matters from our body. However, it is not as effective as colon hydrotherapy and colema because they do a better job by flushing your colon. But those methods are more expensive

If you want to give colon cleansing a try, go for colon cleanser and feel the effect first!
